endings

this last week has been full of fun, both as part of work and outside of it! being on support was a ton of fun, lots of teamwork and productivity in getting projects done, gave the garden lots of love this week. support projects included raking out all the poop and straw from the barnyard, massive comfrey weeding, some lopping of branches, firewood collection, garden bed prep and lettuce planting, and a bit uppotting project to clean out the greenhouse -garden manager helped us with this and i learned so much about how to start plants from cuttings! there have been more food adventures and ive been trying to take adventure of the kitchen and ingredients during this last week. on monday for our cook night i did a dosa experiment (good flavor, difficult structure to get large crepe shape so went for smaller) and we did a big salad with more herby croutons. i also have been continuing the veggie stirfry trend to use bok choy and miscellaneous greens. the humita project was our most i...

little wonders

as my time here starts to draw to a close, im trying to take advantage of the summer ive spent and cherish this place and the moments. here are some reflections/discoveries ive been trying to get down to the beach more! adventure 1 included climbing split rock, adventure 2 was a stroll to the north side, encountered fisherfolk, read on a sunny rock, and discovered the beautiful wonderful sound of the waves over rocks! the rocks are small on the shore, like sand, but its rocks and they tumble and make a maraca like sound as the waves wash them back to sea. im trying to pay more attention to soundscapes oh, the birds. ducklings grow so fast! just since last sunday the little ones have gotten so much bigger and the cheeps not quite as high. they are super duper poopy too, which reminds me of that one scene in fly away home where they are pooping on the kitchen table. luckily we have straw for them. the CHICKENS are so troublesome! today i had to get them into the coop for sunset, and...

fire things

this is the first fire season I've been in California for a while, as normally I head back to NY around this time. it is very strange to be experiencing fire things here, and it still seems early! we are most impacted by the pt reyes fire, which isn't too bad but is definitely impacting us. some smoke but i think maybe being by the ocean makes it less bad, it smells but i havent had trouble breathing. it makes it difficult to decide what is safe to do as outdoor activity or exercise. we are also preparing for evacuation just in case, and spent wednesday morning clearing out all the brush around our houses. camp has been cancelled, so all the teachers have been on support doing ranch projects! it is actually quite fun to be working as a team in this way, and we did a lot of pasture rotation work, moving electric fences and setting up new paddocks for the rumis. we are also bed prepping in the garden and have been doing a few check ins to talk about what teaching will look like h...
