Day 6

1) rainy day but i still wore sandals! 2) lecture on pecans and GA, did you know that homeless people illegally harvest them off the street to make profit? 3) UGA campus has very different vibes from Vassar 4) what is the taste of a place? 5) peanut lab innovation talk, lots of complicated dynamics to consider w/ regard to aid, research goals, nutrition, market situation 6) lunch had a really long line but i think my peruvian tamale and yuca fries were worth it 7) farm labor panel w/ distinguished prof, phd student, and labor organizer, lots of good perspectives 8) good reminder of how immigrant worth is not based on hard work but status as a human being deserving of rights 9) reflection time as a group, wow its been a packed week 10) words of the day: grocery exploration culminating in tofu

Day 5

1) a van ride down to Athens, GA 2) enviro class about vegetable farming and cooperative extension, learned a lot about how markets work and also the land grant system....v interesting and lots to interrogate here! 3) University of GA has a long frat row 4) hummus, pita, and fosolia veggies 5) condor chocolates factory tour! a v nontraditional factory space. bean to bar production, all cacao from ecuador 6) ate a lot of dif chocolate roasted at dif temperatures 7) word of the day: consumer-driven 8) days inn hotel, still got a minifridge but no microwave 9) walked to a fun grocery store to buy more veggies and some canned soup for dindin! 10) kind of cannot believe its only been 5 days! so many experiences and so many people. i think its catching up to me bc i keep making noises and not fully forming words, but luckily other people are v accepting of my shenanigans

Day 4

1) treadmill run and chat with sleepy mariko 2) wore socks with tevas today 3) intention setting and thinking about community 4) anti-oppression workshop, discussing both personal identities and also history of racism in GA/USA, also settler colonialism as it relates to US history and agriculture 5) read about 1619 project and the foundation of capitalism in the US in plantation economies and slavery 6) a bagel for lunch, finally got my smoked salmon fix! 7) considering my connection to nature and land but that i am not native to CA and also w/ regards to nature and national parks there is interesting history there 8) word of the day: messy 9) ice cream!! chai and butter pecan for me 10) movie and then indian dinner with some new friends

Day 3

1) found some running friends! yay! there was bound to be someone else who was lowkey addicted, so im hopeful for the future of running on this trip 2) first classes! poli and econ are going to be very interdisciplinary i think and more about political economy than either of the two distinct disciplines...re thinking about economics and models, talking about how models use assumptions and are usually wrong but still can be useful, also questioning notions of scarcity and how that relates to actual amount of resource vs access to resource 3) also did some unpacking and complicating of the terms "academic learning" and "culture." v curious to see how anthro class unfolds bc its also sort of a methods class. interesting bc i have more of a soc background 4) had a small beet sandwich for lunch then went in search of apples but none to be had 5) today was a lovely sunny day! 6) afternoon activity was a tour (tourist designed) through downtown atlanta talking about t...

Day 2

1) treadmills are not my favorite, but they function for my morning run fix! realized one of the songs on my spotify is about divorce? not sure how to interpret the fact that i saved it to favorites 2) banana and pb sort of breakfast time 3) lots of time sitting in a chair today, my back is not a happy camper 4) some policy things and rules and orientation things, not terribly exciting but glad to see that the staff and other students all seem to be on similar wavelengths about being intentional and mindful about community and culture and whatnot, an interesting contrast to my summer experience 5) mexican food at lunch, accumulating more leftovers 6) panel with two black farmers in Atlanta, they were v real and our talk was pretty heavy! talked a lot about how land has been repeatedly stolen starting with white people taking from indigenous folks and the GA land lottery and how this leads to inequity and racism in access to land and economic profits from farming today 7) discusse...

Day 1

1) Sleeping with 2 kitties! 2) I went on a run in bougie neighborhood north of Atlanta, saw many a fancy house and enjoyed a nice park with running path around lake 3) brunched with my host at a cute restaurant in Decatur (east Atlanta) and tried a beautifully fuschia beet veggie burger 4) did some work at a coffee shop and publicly eavesdropped to a v interesting and mildly flirtatious conversation that included discussion of Marxism, guns, art therapy, and classism as the root of all social problems 5) orientation with group and many new names and faces 6) noodle dinner -lime coconut vermicelli soup for me, with lots of veggies! 7) im feeling pretty antsy but also tired -likely bc of all this social interaction 8) its not too cold 9) the barista at the coffee shop complimented my scarf (shoutout to Julia for knitting it for me) 10) word(s) of the  day: engage group brain
