Day 2
1) treadmills are not my favorite, but they function for my morning run fix! realized one of the songs on my spotify is about divorce? not sure how to interpret the fact that i saved it to favorites
2) banana and pb sort of breakfast time
3) lots of time sitting in a chair today, my back is not a happy camper
4) some policy things and rules and orientation things, not terribly exciting but glad to see that the staff and other students all seem to be on similar wavelengths about being intentional and mindful about community and culture and whatnot, an interesting contrast to my summer experience
5) mexican food at lunch, accumulating more leftovers
6) panel with two black farmers in Atlanta, they were v real and our talk was pretty heavy! talked a lot about how land has been repeatedly stolen starting with white people taking from indigenous folks and the GA land lottery and how this leads to inequity and racism in access to land and economic profits from farming today
7) discussed struggles they face today and big critiques for philanthropy bc it is just another way for those w/ power and money to keep control of systems, debunking the idea of a win-win situation and suggesting that real justice requires people offering up their money for oppressed communities to control and use as they want --> i am wondering how i fit into these sorts of dynamics as someone w/ privilege whose family has duality of both benefit and oppression w/in these systems and what solidarity looks like? also how i will likely disrupt narratives of generational progress (esp in AsAm context) and how i feel about this
8) word of the day: value
9) grocery shopping + leftovers for dinner, we love some baby spinach
10) pleased with all the people on the trip so far, so many people thinking about food and the environment and social justice and trying to practice things, but also definitely interesting to see how we will navigate spaces that we enter as a majority white group, todays panel was a first glance at that i think
