Beginning

On March 14, I left a special food adventure in Ecuador to return to California.

Today is June 14, and I left my house in California to begin a new food adventure...also in California, a mere 50 minute drive from my door in El Cerrito, but an adventure all the same! I find it useful to write about experiences that I sense are special, and while I think that journaling on pen and paper feels more appropriate for this experience, I'll also make use of the ease and speed that typing allow, as well as the share-ability of this space.

This afternoon I moved into Slide Ranch! It is literally on the California coast, right next to the ocean. I can hear the waves outside my tiny house as I write now. My new living space is a small cabin called "the chapel" or "the buoy house." All of the residences have different names and their own personality. My house is one of the smallest, but I have a good feeling about it...there are some lovely, kind notes left by former inhabitants. There is also a satchel with various teaching objects, some poems, and suggestions for anti-racism as it pertains to food justice and nature. I also have a giant binder with teaching materials and lessons, and I'm looking forward to delving into it more thoroughly.

I spent my afternoon unpacking, and starting to meet new folks. It's been a warm welcome: sweet walnut cranberry foccaccia, chocolate chip cookies and a card, and homemade sushi for a lovely outside dinner on picnic benches overlooking the setting sun. I've met the two other summer teachers, and a variety of the other staff and their families, including some entertainingly talkative small children and a very friendly, beautiful black cat.

I've done a bit of exploring on the trails, soaking in the coastal views and soundscapes, scoping out good pee spots, and paying my respects to the animals. There is much more to get acquainted with, and I'm sure I will over the coming weeks. Whales have been spotted recently, so I hope that I'll get a chance for lots of wildlife encounters!

Mum was concerned about food. Worry not! There is a long list of snacks in the kitchen, and we have two teachers who are devoted to being our snack providers. It is like local, free, Instacart. In some ways, this quarantine situation has made us into honored guests of a sort, with everything served to us.

I am so pleased with my new living space and this larger land that is my new home. My soul feels very happy and I sense good things on the horizon. Early to bed for an early start in the morning :)
