wow! a long week
the hiatus in blogging is evidence of a very very busy week! we were getting trained in milking of the goats this week, which mean an 8 hour work day + 3 hours of milking from 7-10pm on Tues, Wed, and Thurs. it's also just been a somewhat hectic week as staff transitions and preparing for camp are in full swing. i anticipate that the rest of the summer will be similarly busy, so the blogging will likely happen with less frequency...but i'll attempt to share some notable moments and highlights!
night milking! i am now proficient at milking goats, but still a bit slow, particular the last step that requires massaging the udder and stripping the teat to get all the milk and prevent mastitis. one of the goats kicks, so i need to improve my reflexes...i got a pailful of milk all over myself bc she kicked after i had already milked out most of her udders. yikes! another new discovery from night milking is that the barn is an ideal pee spot, bc its covered and there is straw on the ground for the animal pee/poop :P
on the subject of bathrooms, we all now have our own personal portapotties as residents, as well as individual port a potties for our camp groups. some folks have decorated already, im still brainstorming but have decided to use the urinal to store various aromatic herbs from the garden. currently featuring lavender.
we had an amazing low tide exploration earlier this week! probably the lowest tide i've ever been out exploring during, and lots to see and hear. many sea stars, anemones, TONS of crabs and mussels, some fish, various algae and other organisms. pretty cool spot.
new runs! did an early run to muir woods entrance with a fellow teacher earlier in the week, and this morning i did a big loop through muir woods up to pantoll and then down coastal view. the microclimates are real...i started in the fog here on the coast, got dappled sunlight through the redwoods and upon emergence at pantoll up near tam, then promptly returned to the fog on the way down to the coast.
this has been a good week in terms of dinners: monday folks made adobo and other filipino foods including tomato salad and eggplant torta, tuesday was a warm veggie soup, sesame sourdough, chard and garlic, and vegan chocolate pudding, wednesday was a spread of turmeric tofu, squash corn fritters, roast veggies, lettuce and a yummy sundried tomato sauce, and thursday was fritatta, bread, and a lovely salad with walnuts, avocado, and cranberries
we finally figured out the themes for camp and in avatar-esque style, they are air, water, and earth. my first week is AIR so i am planning some activities with wind, birds, seed dispersal, and talking about greenhouse gases....my group is mostly 10-12 age range, which is older than im used to but I think might be an opportunity to get a little more conceptual and serious. but still plenty of games in store!
i am still participating in a transformative justice workshop series, and one thing that really stood out to me from this weeks content was the concept of taking accountability vs being held accountable. accountability here is defined as "a continuous, active, and voluntary process of being responsible to yourself and those around you for your choices and the consequences of your choices. unlike punishment, it is something we do rather than something that is done to us." i think this feels really relevant to so many things in my life, in this workplace environment, and obviously in the world right now, so im trying to consider it deeply for myself
last week's sunshine is a thing of the past, and this week has been mostly foggy and cloudy. i am employing layers and drinking tea from a large mason jar.
taking this weekend to relax, prepare for camp, and do some baking projects! strawberry shortcake and rhubarb ginger streusel bars are the plan...plus some experiments for snacks along the way at camp
