Day 11
1) early morning, some vocal exercises as our group activity
2) visit to lewis taylor farms, a large produce farm, one of the largest in GA
3) interesting conversation with the owner's daughter, she had lots of strong opinions about buying from the US, buying seasonal, and washing your food
4) she said that the pesticides used for their organics are basically the same as what they use for their conventional...not sure how to interpret this
5) she talked a lot about safety regulations and how that highly impacts farm practices, but she seemed to think it was v important and talked about agriculture as a "national security" issue due to less safe standards overseas
6) all their workers are part of H2A system, mostly from Mexico. lots of interesting things that she had to say about their conditions and relationships
7) a statistic that really stuck with me is that the farm had to hire domestic workers before going to H2A system, when they hired 1800 usa workers, only 3 made it past 2 weeks...shows how hard the work is
8) apparently trump and bush have visited this farm?!
9) 3 hour drive back to atlanta, read lots of octavia butler
10) rainy walk to explore a bit of downtown atlanta, olympic centennial park, and then dinner at a southern restaurant frequented by mlk
