Day 18

1) me encanta despertar a la luz natural y ver las montanas afuera de mi ventana
2) desayuno de fruta, pan, y huevos, tambien un poco de yogur
3) econ class discussed moral economy (stability achieved through collective village supported by patron) vs political economy (belief in open markets and individual/rational choice of peasants)
4) discussion about nuestros proyectos de investigaciones, our class is interested in really big ideas and interpretive research, but most likely more realistic to look at specific variables
5) tried on some RAIN BOOTS for future fun times. size 36
6) 2 speakers on Ecuador's politics and economics. learned a lot of important background. interesting that "rights of nature" are recognized in constitution but extractivist economy is huge. remittances also big source of foreign exchange. re social problems, seems like there is tension around indigenous populations and immigrants (esp from venezuela)
7) $3 lunch of soup, main plate, and dessert, wow!
8) group debriefed some of the transition to ecuador, its been an intense past few days. grateful that i am already familiar with homestay experience bc i think that part has been v enjoyable and not uncomfortable for me
9) fun times with the host fam! ate some empanadas, danced and played doctor with the 3 yr old (unfortunately she was very sad when we had to go eat dinner bc she wanted to play, there was some crying but i think its ok now)
