chaos and peace

What's new?

The slow death of my right hand continues. While the poison oak bubbles have died down to the point of being blobby red patches instead of pus-filled bubbles, I've added some new bubbles in the form of burns from oil burns. Oil burns? It happens when you fry a mountain of vegetable tempura! There may also have been a tiny bit of hair singeing in the process of getting used to the gas stovetop lighter situation, but we all made it out with our eyebrows!
This was NOT with the campers, this kitchen adventure was my first cook night! Me and my partner originally planned to make thai basil tofu, but we are out of tOFU! Yikes. So we made a coconut lentil curry with basil garnish, tempura, rice, and salad with peanutty dressing. It was a lot of fun to cook together and folks were most appreciative, but I also feel like I may smell like oil for a few days now.
Also, my mission to work through the molasses began on Sunday night, I made ginger cake!

Today we switched chores, so I no longer spend my afternoons with the sheep and goats...but with my true love, the vegetables! (JK, I still miss the rumis). I have the harvest chore, which I am very excited about. Basically I get to roam around the garden and harvest things that are in need! And then there is a washing and weighing process for organic certification. I'm pleased because this chore gives me power in what sort of produce will be in the fridge, but I also think it's possible I could spend more than my 30 min of work time on the chore because I get excited and want to harvest everything so that it doesn't go to waste.

So how are the kiddos doing? Mixed reviews, today they were very hot and also just wanted to play games and not the games that I had in mind. We attempted to do a poem circle about the ocean, but rather than go with my ocean artsy vibes, they decided to take it in a bathroom humor direction...some goats and poop involved and also fish? It's been a bit of a messy day.
Monday was more successful in terms of doing things related to our WATER theme, we spent some time talking about water and animals and then water content in vegetables and made a stir fry with a lot of different things from the garden that turned out ok but was over-salted.

In other news, the weather has been beautiful and the sun makes for amazing light in the morning for my runs. Over the ocean there is a beautiful gradient from blue gray to lavender to pink and light orange, with the moon on top. Over the hillside, there is the light and warmth of yellow sunbeams beginning to peak up from the east. No matter the chaos of the camp day, I'm grateful for my quiet morning jaunts and ocean lullabies for bedtime. I even did a bit of beachside yoga on Sunday afternoon because I was so excited by the sunny weather. Emily, my yoga buddy, did the service of calling me so I could hear the routine over the phone since I couldn't pull up our yoga video due to no wifi. Hehe!
