end of the session!

today was my last day with the first batch of campers! it feels weird to see them go, and know that i'll likely never see them again. i am sad, but also really excited for next session with younger kids (4-7!!).

for our final day we spent a lot of free time and some final game time, so it was a somewhat chill day....although we were on the rocky side of the beach at high tide, which was somewhat nerve-wracking because i didn't realize how many rock climbing opportunties there were and spent much of our time there hovering over the one 6 yr old in my group bc he was really into climbing and i was nervous about the scrambling resulting in injury. luckily we all made it out in one piece! we made a fire today, which was a nice end to camp, and i tried to have them do skits...but they were basically improv stories bc they werent very invested in it. ah well

normally camp friday's have a "farmer's market" component for kids to show off what they've been making to their families. this year that wasn't possible, but we still tried to make some stuff for them to display at our drop off/pick up spot and to take home. my group did bookmarks with plant texture stamps (ie paint a flower and stamp it on the paper) and a little wool spun string, salt dough sculptures (we had a lot of poop sculptures, and some nudibranchs, also a lovely octopus alien and various other creatures/concepts). my proudest group creation was a chocolate beet "earth" cake. it was for our soil day, my concept was that beets are a root vegetable that grow in the soil and then we put little sunflower seeds on top of the cake so it sort of looked like a garden bed. the campers were very skeptical about the beets and were not excited to eat it at first, but i think most of them were converted once we tried it (there were only 3 beets, and 1 3/4 c of sugar). some even asked for the recipe, so that made me happy!

other camp news...milking with the kids has been going a bit more smoothly, but my hands are continuing to die a slow death. i think i have a never round of posion oak, and my burn scabs keep reopening bc they are on my joints. in other bodily inconveniences, we got covid tested again yesterday! my eyes watered more this time, it was a bit painful. let's hope all the results are negative!

today we had a "ranch session" which is like a training for ranch stuff. it was fun, we made goat milk soap and fudge!

i am really enjoying the bountiful produce. i've started eaten my dinner in a giant bowl bc that's the easiest way to fit my massive amounts of veg matter. tonights dinner is chard and chickpeas, along with roasted veg: 1 head broccoli, 2 small-ish squash, 1 small potato, 1/2 a large tomato, 1 purple onion. we are also rich in stone fruit (lots of homegrown plums included) so i have been eating probably like over 10 a day....4-6 plums, 2-3 nectarines, a peach here or there, apriums, pluots...its a good life!

but unfortunately there are some bad things to report in the kitchen. i wanted to make a rhubarb plum pie today, and due to my hand situation i decided i should do oil crust since butter is a very hands in dough process for me. what a mistake!! my dough did not turn out well and this combined with my inability to find a rolling pin made for a very patchy bottom crust. i gave up on a top and opted for a crumble topping instead. we'll see how it goes, but this was a very disheartening experience and has instilled deeper my oil crust grudge. butter for sure next time!!!!!!!

the other small bit of bad news for the week is that i can tell we have passed the solstice. waking up at 530 it is not dark, but not fully light. this makes it a bit more difficult to get out of bed for that morning run, but once im out the door, im glad! although its been very cloudy and foggy this week so less lovely views. but feels very bay area so i guess thats comforting in a way :)
