busy busy friday

Today is Friday, wow! Ended up with a long day at the farm today, we've been doing lots of different activities.

We bunched oregano and thyme to be sold. Only made 15 bunches but it took 1 hr! Labor intensive stuff, sort of understand why herbs are expensive now I suppose, but oh so lovely to have one's own herb garden!

We also planted some long rows with napa transplants and celery this week! The long rows take a while, we have to make holes, dip the transplants in compost and oyster shells, then plant them. Planting took a while, I become very aware of my body positions...mostly the squat, but a little bit of kneeling or sometimes leg out...and I really favor bending my right knee! After planting we put row cover over them, which I think would be a comical bride's veil for a farmer. What a long train! We weigh it down with bricks or dirt.

We also planted some flowers, we've been doing a long row with quite the assortment! Many sunflowers, strawflowers, zinnias, alyssum, poppies, queen annes lace, marigolds, cosmos...and maybe other things, there were so many! We lay the seeds on quite thick in 2 rows, and hope that they come up and the birds don't eat them first.

The other prepping for this day of planting happened earlier this week, which consisted of weeding, laying down drip tape, and tractor work (I didnt do the tractor, I am not ready to drive something that tall!)

I also spent one morning shelling beans! Saved and dried in the field, and will be replanted. Lots of pretty types! A good mindless activity, so I watched some great british bake off and listened to a podcast on the Fatted Calf (in SF! ) because this week we were talking about butchering/meat processing and cheese and then cold storage

Weather has been a bit chillier this week, misty mornings and cloudy evenings, I even pulled out my puffy jacket for an afternoon walk

I have been eating a lot of tomatoes and zucchini bc we have quite an excess and I feel compelled to consume as much as possible
today i made a almond flour pizza crust and topped with herbs, onions, zucchini and tomato

Im making progress on thesis I think, did some outlining and drafting of chapters, starting actually writing a bit for chapter 1 and am continuing to read and gather resources.
I revisited Agyeman's Just Sustainabilities book. What Im v curious about is how to change systems and shift paradigms, and one of his key frameworks for an alternative economic model is co-production, which is basically involving the user/consumer in some aspect of the product/service production or distribution or design. Im curious to think about how farm to table education plays into this, as well as models like CSAs and other local ag/food efforts
